Sheung Li and Dr. James Gilb Provide Leading Industry Insights on Use of Millimeter Wave Technology for Wireless Networks

Who: Sheung Li , Director of Product Development and Marketing, and James Gilb, Ph.D., Director of Standards and Advanced Technology of SiBEAM, Inc, a fabless semiconductor company and pioneer in intelligent 60GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) technologies.

What: Mr. Li and Dr. Gilb have co-authored the chapter “Millimeter Waves for Wireless Networks” in the new book Millimeter Wave Technology in Wireless PAN, LAN, and MAN, designed to provide guidance needed to help students and IT professionals navigate through this new technology. Published by Auerbach Publications, the premier publisher for IT professionals, this text covers the fundamental concepts, recent advances and potential that these millimeter wave technologies will offer with respect to circuits design, system architecture, protocol development and standardization activities.

Chapter contents include:
- Presents the basic concepts of the mmWave technology in emerging WPAN, WLAN and WMAN markets
- Addresses fundamental problems and key challenges in designing mmWave circuits and systems
- Examines the specific new mechanism in resolving limitations of the mmWave technology
- Identifies future directions for mmWave

Why: SiBEAM is the first company to develop and manufacture chipsets based on the 60GHz frequency in CMOS, revolutionizing audio and video technology through its high-bandwidth capabilities. SiBEAM is also a founding member of the WirelessHD™ Consortium, the first industry group to develop a standardized solution for the wireless transmission of lossless, uncompressed high-definition audio and video content. Mr. Li and Dr. Gilb’s contribution to Millimeter Wave Technology in Wireless PAN, LAN, and MAN further establishes SiBEAM’s expertise in 60GHz and millimeter wave technology.

About James Gilb:
Dr. James P. K. Gilb has 15 years industry experience working for a variety of companies including Northrop Grumman, Motorola and Mobilian and Appairent Technologies. His work has covered a variety of areas ranging from radar absorbing materials and structures to RFIC design and layout to radio systems design and implementation. Dr. Gilb joined SiBEAM in 2005 and is Director, Standards and Advanced Technology working on a variety of Gb/s wireless projects. He is the Technical Editor of the WirelessHD specification, which is an open specification for transport of uncompressed, lossless high definition video over a distance of 10 m with throughput greater than 3 Gb/s using 60 GHz frequency band. He is currently the Technical Editor of the IEEE 802.15 Working Group and the IEEE 802.15.3c Task Group and has been the Technical Editor of the IEEE 802.15.3 Task Group and the IEEE 802.15.3b Task Group. He is also the recording secretary for the IEEE 802 Executive Committee.

Dr. Gilb received the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1987 from the Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude. In 1989, he received the Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institution and was named the Outstanding Graduate of the Graduate College. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1999, also from Arizona State University.

He has five issued patents, many papers published in refereed journals, and is the author of two books: Wireless Multimedia: A Guide to the IEEE 802.15.3 Standard and IEEE Wireless Dictionary.
