Delivers high-performance HSPA and EDGE, rich media playback, extended play time

NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today announced a feature-packed, ultra-small, single-core, dual-mode Nexperia Cellular Multimedia Baseband PNX6712 for HSPA and EDGE. Based on 65-nm process technology, it offers manufacturers advanced on-chip multimedia features, such as H.264 decoding on QVGA at 30 frames per second (fps). The PNX6712 forms the engine of NXP’s Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6712 - a powerful HSDPA/HSUPA/EDGE platform, enabling sub-$30 electronic bill-of-materials (eBoM).

NXP’s Nexperia Cellular Multimedia Baseband PNX6712 outperforms existing HSPA-EDGE basebands in its category by combining best-in-class multimedia features, up to 750 hours of standby, 45 hours of MP3 and 8 hours of video playback, and a multitude of connectivity options for anytime, anywhere content transfer. The solution provides manufacturers a platform for high-performance multimedia phones, with a highly flexible and efficient architecture built around an ARM926-EJ processor, unique algorithms for voice and video, hardware accelerated low-power video, graphics and camera features, and built-in security and digital rights management (DRM).

“NXP has yet again raised the bar for HSPA feature phones, by developing a comprehensive dual-mode EDGE-HSPA baseband solution that is ready-to-integrate and very flexible, allowing manufacturers to offer a rich mobile multimedia experience with extended playback time and seamless mobility of content,” said Armand Guerin, Vice-President, Product Line Feature Phones, NXP Semiconductors. “The PNX6712 feeds into the growing demand for integrating multiple telecom standards with support for high-speed access to digital content anytime, anywhere.”

Packaged into a 12x12mm footprint with a 0.4mm pitch, NXP’s Nexperia Cellular Multimedia Baseband PNX6712 features single-core architecture, eliminating the need for an external multimedia co-processor. It supports the latest audio and video codecs, four microphone inputs for better voice quality, two class-D amplifiers for clear sound, W/QVGA display interfaces, and TV-out functionality. All these features are supported by over 10 connectivity interfaces, including USB Hi-Speed OTG, SDIO, SPI, most memory cards as well as system level extensions for A-GPS, NFC, BT, FM, for seamless sharing of content.
