Bertha’s Son is a memoir that recounts the author’s childhood trauma from sexual and emotional abuse and neglect. Growing up in a poor family, Joseph already had a fair share of misery. He suffered at the hands of his cold and heartless father and was sexually abused by his teenage relatives. Aside from the fact that his father didn’t want him and his mother, Joseph also had to endure several health issues and could not go to school until he was ten. But then a kind-hearted individual sees the struggle Joseph and his mother had experienced. This person started providing extra money, food, and clothing for them. With the little help they received, they managed to survive.
His life at school was far from being good. He was constantly ridiculed because of his ragged appearance. But this never stopped stop him from excelling in academics. Later, he secured a prestigious Cambridge fellowship, started a medical career, and moved to America due to his stable job. However, he also had to endure racism and jealousy from his co-workers.
Waddy’s story represents the story of immigrants who achieved success and triumph despite the discrimination and discouragements they experienced.

Joseph N. Waddy, a retired registered nurse, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences and a Master’s degree in health care administration. He was born in Guyana, South America and migrated to the United States as a young man to attend school. He has spent over 30 years working in the healthcare field, from working in the jungles of Guyana to being a nursing administrator in the United States. He has had to face some difficulties throughout his life. However, with courage and perseverance, he managed to create a happy life surrounded by love and joy. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and maintaining an active lifestyle. He travels often and always emerges in any new activity of interest. He was born in Guyana and lives in Staten Island, New York, with his wife, Dorothy.
