The Comedy Arena Takes Their Show to the Next Level; Literally!

Eat, Drink and See Funny! The Comedy Arena, the premier comedy club of North Texas, is reopening bigger and better on January 1, 2021. In addition to offering comedy shows, comedy classes and private comedy events, there will be a café that will open everyday at 11:00AM to serve coffee and lunch items which will transform into a full-service bar with food and comedy nightly. 

“It’s not just about opening again, it’s also about opening up again in a manner that is safe to our guests and performers,” said Von Daniel, co-owner and founder of The Comedy Arena. “We know people need comedy more than ever, but we also know we have a responsibility to ensure that comedy is delivered in an environment where our guests feel safe.”

When The Comedy Arena first opened its doors in April of 2017, it was simply a 1500 sq ft space with an 10’x5’ stage, a concessions counter, and a greenroom for the performers. Though a very intimate space, the owners knew this wasn’t their vision when they decided to open a comedy club and join the McKinney community. So in February of 2020, a new lease was signed which included taking over part of the second floor of the current space at 305 E. Virginia Street, just off the square of historic downtown McKinney. Plans included a larger mainstage with more tables and chairs, seating capacity upstairs, more state-of-the-art equipment for shows and classes, and a downstairs lounge with a kitchen and a full bar that will be affectionately known as the Laugh Out Lounge, which is likely to host Open Mics, Karaoke and even Game & Trivia nights.

It’s not just about doubling their physical space’s footprint, but they are also more than doubling their hours. Instead of only being only on weekend evenings, they will be open 7 days week from 11:00AM so guests can enjoy a casual cafe environment during the day serving everything from coffees to sandwiches and then by night, guests can expect happy hours with a stocked bar, more food and or course, comedy shows, events and classes.

Like many small businesses, the pandemic has certainly been a huge setback for The Comedy Arena. In February they started construction on their renovations, but in March they had to close down all operations. So how did they react? Being the improvisational experts they are, they truly improvised. In April, they took their shows to the screen saying the show must go online. In the following months, they started virtual team building and training on Zoom, launched Family Game Night, started performing socially distant outdoor comedy shows on their patio rooftop, conducted classes to help teachers use improv to better teach virtually, and welcomed their first private event upstairs in their new space despite having no stage or lights. They also headlined the City of Irving’s Laughs by the Lake (another virtual show) as well as the Plano Virtual Comedy Festival.
