Successful ramp-up for ESP-microsystem

Significant increase in production volume in 2007

Dortmund: A specific product of ELMOS Semiconductor AG for automotive application ’Electronic Stability Program (ESP)’ is developing exceptionally well. For more than twelve months the production volume has been increasing continuously. ELMOS combines two micro-mechanic sensors and an aligned evaluation electronic in a so-called micro-system. The components are assembled in a special package. Both the evaluation electronic and the production process for the package were developed by ELMOS in close cooperation with the customer.

ELMOS Advanced Packaging based in Nijmegen, Netherlands, is one of the leading manufactures for special packages, which fulfil the general automotive regulations with regard to robustness and easy processing but also support the physical requirements of sensor technology. In the future the ELMOS subsidiary will focus on this type of specific packages. The production of cost-effective and high quality silicon sensors for the automotive industry is made possible by the perfect combination of micromechanics, microelectronics and a functional package.

Currently, approximately one hundred thousand micro-systems are supplied per month. A further significant increase is expected for the coming months. „The successful ramp-up of the ESP micro-system gives us cause for optimism for more products in this sector. We will continue to accelerate this product series also in view of the new safety regulations in the U.S.”, says Dr. Frank Rottmann, member of the board for sales and development of ELMOS Semiconductor AG.

At present, further projects for future use in ESP systems are in an advanced development stage. Due to the combination of the sensor element and the evaluation electronic in a specific package, the ESP system in cars can be established in a cost-effective and space-saving manner.

The successful ramp-up is particularly interesting with respect to the new safety regulations in the U.S. The U.S. government lately released a new regulation regarding the safety of new cars to the effect that car manufactures have to begin equipping every new car weighing less than five tons with an ESP system starting in 2009. As of September 2011 the system will be part of the standard equipment.

ELMOS Semiconductor AG is a producer and developer of system solutions on semiconductor basis. For more than 20 years, roughly 90% of sales have been generated with chips for automotive electronics.
