Tiny Resonator Replaces Crystal in Mobile Handsets and Other Space-Constrained Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 18, 2006 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), the market leader in USB, today announced that it has approved Murata Electronics’ new CSTCE24M0XK2XXX-R0 ceramic resonator for use in conjunction with Cypress’s MoBL-USB™ and EZ-USB® family of high-speed USB devices.

The 24-MHz resonator measures only 3.2 x 1.3 x 1.0 mm, providing a 90 percent board area savings and 70 percent reduction in thickness compared with an 11.35 x 4.65 x 3.5 mm crystal commonly used in high-speed USB designs. This space savings is especially valuable in portable devices such as mobile handsets, where Cypress’s MoBL-USB FX2LP18 controller delivers lightning-fast downloads of music files, photos and videos.

The Murata resonator is the only resonator that provides a 24-MHz frequency with an initial tolerance of -250 to +200 ppm. Also, since the resonator integrates the load-capacitors, there are further space savings compared with using a crystal. Cypress recommends the device to customers as an alternative to crystals when space and/or tighter tolerance are concerns. Cypress is the first and only USB vendor to test and approve the Murata resonator for use with its high-speed USB devices.

“The Murata resonator is an excellent solution for space-constrained applications,” said Steven Larky, vice president of Cypress’s USB Product Line. “We are pleased to recommend it to our customers as part of our ’whole-product support’ strategy of giving customers everything they need to design quickly and cost-effectively with Cypress USB products.”

“As the industry leader in USB, Cypress is well respected by customers worldwide,” said John F. Denslinger, Executive Vice President of Murata Sales and Marketing. “Receiving certification from Cypress assures designers that they will experience an efficient and successful development process.”

Cypress recently announced that it has shipped over 500 million USB controllers, including over 130 million in 2005. The controllers, which began shipping in 1997, are used in a wide array of USB host and peripheral consumer devices. Cypress offers the industry’s most complete portfolio of USB devices, including low-, full-, and high-speed controllers, hosts, hubs, bridges and wireless solutions.

About MoBL-USB and EZ-USB
Cypress’s EZ-USB and MoBL-USB controllers are fully integrated peripheral controllers, including an 8051 microprocessor, a serial interface engine, a high speed USB 2.0 transceiver, on-chip RAM and FIFO and a general programmable interface" Their unique architecture handles all basic USB functions, enabling the host system’s microprocessor to focus on application-specific functions and ensuring sustained high-performance data transfer rates. The new MoBL-USB FX2LP18 controller is part of an expanding family of MoBL-USB products from Cypress that includes the recently introduced MoBL-USB TX2 transceiver and future products with additional features. The devices have a 1.8-volt core and support an I/O voltage range of 1.8 V to 3.3 V to interface seamlessly with several generations of baseband processors, application processors, ASICs and ASSPs. Offered in very small VFBGA (Very Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array) packages, the devices take advantage of Cypress’s 0.13-micron C8™ process technology to slash dynamic and standby power consumption by nearly 80 percent versus the nearest competitors, while offering much greater functionality.
