A Taste of Excellence in Italian Wines: from Sassicaia to Roussin de Morgex

VIA will hold tastings of both rare and famous wines to broadcast and illustrate the complexity and wonders of Italian Wines

The Expo 2015 Universal Exhibition will be staged in Milan from the 1st of May to the 31st of October 2015 and on this occasion, Vinitaly will be busy organizing The Italian Wine Pavilion, an area of 2000+ sqm entirely dedicated to Italian Wines.

In this spirit and as the true Ambassador of Italian wines, Vinitaly will be travelling to neighbouring countries Germany, Switzerland and Austria to present 12 amongst the hundreds of thousands Italian wines exhibited by the more than 4000 Italian wine producers during the world’s largest wine and spirits fair.

Starting from October the 7th, Vinitaly will go first to Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Munich and then, just a few days later, to Zurich and Vienna.

During each stop the Vinitaly International Academy (VIA), Vinitaly International’s new educational project, will be presenting one of its prestigious Executive Wine Seminars with the aim to engage and unveil just a glimpse of the immense diversity of Italy’s grapes, wines and territories.

Ian D’Agata, VIA Scientific Director and author of Native Wine Grapes of Italy, in collaboration with Austrian wine expert, Luzia Schrampf, will be on hand to guide the tasting of world famous wines including Sassicaia of Tenuta San Guido winery, Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Brunello di Montalcino by Donatella Cinelli Colombini and Barolo Cerequio of the Chiarlo winery.

But it’s not only about famous wines. The VIA Executive Wine Seminars will represent an ideal opportunity for professionals to also discover and learn about rare varieties that are usually nearly impossible to taste such as the Grand Noir grape and the practically extinct Roussin de Morgex, discovered by Doctor D’Agata himself while walking high up in Valle d’Aosta’s alpine cliffs. This type of grape was known to still exist, but nobody was making wine from it. From a close collaboration with Nicola Del Negro, Technical Director at the Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et La Salle, a wine made from Roussin de Morgex was finally reborn and will be presented for the very first time outside of Italy during Vinitaly’s European roadshow.

“German-speaking countries are very important markets for Italian Wines and we as VIA will hold tastings of both rare and famous wines to broadcast and illustrate the complexity and wonders of Italian Wines" explains Doctor D’Agata. "In this respect, our goal is also to create certified Italian Wine professionals from all over the world and I look forward to meeting them personally in the territory".

A Taste of Excellence will offer Vinitaly International Academy the perfect opportunity to continue in its quest for 50 Ambassadors of Italian Wine in view of the 5 day certification course to be organized by the Academy just before Vinitaly: top European wine experts and educators will be recruited for the occasion and, together with other important names of the international world of wine, will be present during the trade fair offering wine professionals from Europe and beyond one reason more to visit Vinitaly 2015.
