NBC Universal’s Environmental Initiative Branches Out With All New Eco-Applications

For the first time, “Green is Universal,” NBC Universal’s ongoing environmental initiative, will reach consumers on the Apple App Store, Facebook, Twitter, Evite and MySpace.

Just in time for Earth Week, GIU has launched several new digital initiatives, including iBloom, an innovative new application available on the Apple App Store, where iPhone and iPod touch users can exercise their ’green’ thumbs to grow digital flowers. The launches coincide with the company’s second annual Earth Week (April 19th through April 26th), where more than 40 different NBCU brands air over 100 hours of green-themed content across numerous platforms.

“We are excited to reach consumers with all new, fun digital applications this Earth Week and beyond. With iBloom, Evite, MySpace, Facebook and green widgets, our viewers have more digital tools than ever to become engaged in Green,” said Beth Colleton, Green Is Universal.

The iBloom app lets iPhone and iPod touch users plant and nurture virtual seeds by watering them and keeping pollution away, in attempt to produce beautiful digital flowers. Once the first seed has been taken care of, users have the ability to plant two additional flowers with increased difficulty levels. To celebrate iBloom’s launch, Green is Universal has also partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to donate 10,000 trees to local parks and schools during Earth Week.

The iBloom app is available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore. For more information, go to http://www.greenisuniversal.com/iphone.php.

In addition, Bravo has partnered with Evite, the leading online invitation and social planning service on the Web, to create a special, celebrity-designed collection of online invitations that are not only paperless, but also give back to the environment in a new way. From now until May 31st, each time a design from the collection is used, Bravo and Evite will donate $1 to the National Audubon Society, one of the country’s longest standing organizations supporting ecological conservation.

The special “Go Green” collection, featured on both BravoTV.com and Evite.com, showcases invitation designs contributed by a variety of Bravo celebs, with stylish invites for all types of occasions. As the leader in the online invitation space, Evite will send over 250 million online invitations this year, which, in bypassing paper invitations and envelopes, will save over 200,000 trees. Green is Universal’s other green-themed digital applications include a ’Green Shops Here’ widget, located at http://wgtclsp.nbcuni.com/c/widget.bs?wid=48ff947aac5666fb, which keeps green shoppers in the know by featuring environmentally-themed gifts available at the NBC Universal store. Items include the Future Earth DVD, a Central Perk cup cozy and Michael DeJong’s latest book “Clean Body.” Green is Universal will also donate five percent of its green item sales from the NBC Universal Store, available online at www. greenisuniversal/shop, to the Arbor Day Foundation during Earth Week.
