Companies demonstrating IMS blended service at 3GSM World Congress tradeshow next week in Barcelona, Spain

FEBRUARY 08, 2006, MURRAY Hill, NJ — Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced an agreement with IBM to deliver leading next generation solutions that enable service providers to more rapidly introduce new Internet Protocol (IP)-based services while managing expenses.

Together, Lucent and IBM will develop, market and deliver joint solutions based on Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) that will accelerate the introduction of new blended services for wireless and wireline carriers. The two companies are aligning their technology assets to deliver a complete IMS solution to enable rapid deployment and faster time to market for next-generation IMS composite or blended services. This joint architecture can reduce service providers’ capital and operating expenses as well as enable them to deliver new revenue producing services.

Under the agreement, Lucent and IBM will work together to develop, test and deliver IMS infrastructure, service creation and network management solutions, including billing and operating systems solutions.

The two companies have developed a reference architecture to support operations and billing solutions that leverage IBM’s WebSphere, Rational and Tivoli software, Lucent’s VitalSuite® products, and/or 3rd party independent software vendors and services from each party.

“In this competitive market, carriers are looking to bring next generation services to their customers quickly and at a reduced cost,” said Sandy Aitken, Global IMS Solutions Owner, IBM Communications Sector. “Together IBM and Lucent will provide the capabilities and technology necessary to deliver a complete IMS solution for rapid deployment of composite and blended services.”

Lucent and IBM are already creating pre-IMS joint solutions for a number of services providers. Lucent and IBM are currently conducting or have completed Proof of Concept testing with five different service providers and have had joint discussions with several others. These include service providers in Europe, Asia and North America.

“Our collaboration around IMS was the logical next step in our relationship with IBM. Our complementary IMS assets, capabilities and expertise can deliver the next generation offerings and services demanded by carriers’ residential and enterprise customers,” said John Marinho, corporate strategic marketing vice president, Lucent Technologies.

In related news, at the Lucent stand (A05, located in hall eight) at 3GSM World Congress trade show in Barcelona February 13 - 16, the companies will be demonstrating the interworking of Lucent’s Active PhoneBook application and IBM Workplace Collaboration Services™ for enterprise applications to enable a blended service across wireless and private/enterprise networks. The ability to offer blended services across wireless and private networks will allow carriers to offer end-users lifestyle services at work, at home or on the go.

Lucent and IBM at 3GSM
At 3GSM, the two companies will show how interworking Lucent’s Active PhoneBook and IBM Workplace Collaboration Services enables a blended service spanning wireless and enterprise services. In the scenario, “Alice” opens her contact list (Active PhoneBook application) on her mobile device (cell phone, personal digital assistant, etc.), “sees” that “John” is available and clicks on the VoIP icon to make a call. Lotus Workplace receives the call as it comes to the enterprise, determines where “John” can be reached based on his profile, whether via a Voice over IP call on a personal computer, PBX-based desk phone or a mobile device, and in this example routes the VoIP call to his desk-top, where he answers the call.

Lucent Active PhoneBook
Lucent’s Active PhoneBook application provides a unified approach and a consistent “look and feel” across the various applications a subscriber might use, such as e-mail contact lists, instant messenger buddy lists and mobile handset phone books. Using this technology, an end-user can conduct multi-party, multimedia communications sessions.
