SMFD + Serpas True Food = A Sumptuous Experience

Atlanta, Georgia (March 2, 2009) Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design (SMFD) announces the modern design company’s most recent collaboration—furniture and interior millwork for fine dining darling Scott Serpas’ newest endeavor, Serpas True Food.

Housed in a former cotton storage facility at the StudioPlex loft development in Atlanta’s historic Old Fourth Ward, True Food is, in Serpas’ own words, the embodiment of “approachable,” and evocative of “classic comfort food.” It’s an aesthetic directive that modernist millworkers SMFD took beyond the restaurant’s edible offerings—literally, to the tables themselves. And the walls. And the bar. And the reception area.

SMFD Principal Skylar Morgan was tapped by Chef Serpas and May Architects of Atlanta to complement the restaurant’s industrial-chic, casual-meets contemporary space with a modern but warm patina. “Initially, they wanted stained hickory,” says Morgan. “But I’m not often inclined to just do my part and get out of the way. So, I brought a few ideas to the table, and we came up with something really interesting and unique.”

Morgan chose creamy, solid planks for tabletops, tinted a bit more wood just slightly for architectural cubbies and bar shelves, then suggested a material that favored the space’s well-worn vibe note for note. His choice: hickory panels that would ordinarily be designated as waste wood. They bare their knots, splits, ridges and all in random-width fields that ring the bar at ceiling level. Combined with acid-stained concrete floors and original warehouse door panels mounted as found art, the overall look is complex, curious, and detailed enough to spurn suitable dinner conversation. “I want people to think twice about my work,” says Morgan. “Be inquisitive. Think about the furniture. Start a dialogue. Look further.”

In addition to this work at Serpas, Morgan and SMFD have lent their talents to a number of residential and high-end commercial design projects all over modern, minimalist Atlanta, including Nani Salon + Spa, White Provisions, W Hotel, and most recently Verde Home, where interested buyers can purchase a number of Morgan’s furniture pieces.
