Ever wonder how companies can afford to give away CDs, DVDs and other cool prizes? Do they make special deals with the manufacturers/publishers? Are the backroom deals all just to get a piece of your personal information?

This promises to make it profitable for website owners who already get a lot of traffic and increase the number of new registrations for the contest.

“This is a numbers game,” Savoie added, “the more eyeballs we can put our website in front of, the more advertisers are going to want to put their advertisements on it, and the higher the cost for the ads!”’s goal for 2009 is to give away over 1000 DVDs through contests, promotions and special offers. They are currently surveying visitors to find out what videos they want to win, which makes it easier to target the advertising to match the film genre. In this case, the advertisers get more traffic and can spend more money to pay for more DVDs.

“It is truly a win-win situation! We give more New Release DVDs to our customers, they tell their friends, we get more visitors and our advertising clients are ecstatic! We are even looking to do some video contests with the creative people out there. When we have a New Release that is coming up that elicits a lot of video commentary, we will set up a contest page where folks can put their own home made video on our site and the most popular one will win a DVD of that movie!”

Other companies may have arrangements with DVD distributors, but is one company that is working from the ground up, by building relationships with their customers first and then building their advertiser relationships. Time will tell if this approach of using social media to build a customer base to drive ad revenue will become popular.
