Epson Imaging Devices Corporation (“Epson Imaging Devices”) today announced that it has developed an all-in-one 3.5-inch HVGA liquid crystal display (LCD) with an integrated cover (tempered glass or acrylic) and capacitive touch panel. This new LCD takes advantage of the company’s newly developed Photo Fine Vistarich Neo wide viewing angle technology. Mass production of the displays will commence in April 2009.

With mobile devices becoming more complex as a consequence of their enhanced functionality and increased diversity, there is growing demand for new user interfaces that offer greater control and are easier to use. At the same time, the functionality of mobile devices needs to be improved to match larger screens and technological advances, and creating new added value will require novel designs not found in existing products. Amid these trends, touch panels are becoming more common in mobile phones, portable music players, and other mobile devices as manufacturers strive to meet these needs.

Epson Imaging Devices has developed an all-in-one LCD that combines a slim, narrow-frame touch panel, a cover, and a liquid crystal module. The company has laid the groundwork for mass production of the display, which is scheduled to commence in April 2009. The first model to enter production will be a 3.5-inch HVGA LCD for use in smart phones and other mobile devices. Samples of the display are due to ship in February 2009.

The all-in-one touch-panel LCD with integrated cover and capacitive touch panel has the following characteristics:

1. High visibility thanks to a full-surface optical adhesive that enables the attachment of a touch panel without reducing image quality.
2. High-response, multi-touch functionality as a result of built-in touch panel control.
3. Slim-line, seamless design achieved through structural integration of the cover.

Epson Imaging Devices will continue to develop clear, high-resolution displays that can be used anytime, anywhere and to pioneer new applications for its displays, while creating products for a variety of uses and situations to meet its customers’ diverse needs.

Epson Imaging Devices will exhibit this LCD at the Epson Group booth at FPD International 2008, which will be held from October 29 to 31 at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan.
