HOUSTON – BMC Software (NYSE: BMC) today introduced the industry’s most advanced Performance Advisor technology as part of BMC SQL Performance for DB2 for z/OS. The new technology provides customers with a proactive means to identify and resolve performance problems, reducing CPU consumption by as much as 85 percent while improving service levels and productivity.

According to a recent industry survey conducted by BMC, 99 percent of large mainframe shops (those using more than 10,000 MIPS) use DB2 for z/OS. The survey also revealed that 83 percent of large mainframe shops predicted an increase in MIPs –31 percent being double digit growth.

With the exponential growth in data and 80 percent of the world’s data residing on the mainframe, optimal performance of DB2 applications is crucial as organizations look to manage the data that powers their businesses. BMC SQL Performance for DB2 for z/OS addresses this issue by providing application tuning tools and first-of-its-kind Performance Advisor technology, helping organizations to easily detect performance issues and avoid potential problems with a central repository for performance information.

With the intelligence and automation in Performance Advisor technology, IT professionals are able to better align with business priorities, the core component of a successful business service management (BSM) strategy. In addition, BMC is the first and only vendor to use historical performance trending to predict upcoming issues, allowing users to proactively avoid problems.

Raiffeisen Informatik, one of the largest private providers of professional IT services for corporate customers, sees the success of its IT services reflected directly by the success of its customers. “We depend on solutions from BMC to manage our customers’ complex DB2 environments,” says Norbert Schuech, head of Mainframe, Raiffeisen Informatik. “As a service provider, we must anticipate changes in our customers’ environments and respond quickly. The metrics and trend analysis provided by BMC SQL Performance, using the new Performance Advisor technology, helps ensure that our service levels are met.”

Typically, when DB2 professionals have an application performing poorly they choose to reorganize databases leading to costly and often times unnecessary processing. Now with Performance Advisor technology, they are able to evaluate which applications will benefit from database reorganization — and which will not — saving CPU consumption and reducing wasted cycles by eliminating unneeded reorganizations. BMC SQL Performance for DB2 for z/OS also identifies the root of the performance issue, provides recommended solutions and measures the success for the changes implemented in advance, assuring accurate and efficient problem resolution.

“BMC’s Performance Advisor technology offered in its BMC SQL Performance for DB2 for z/OS solution is a solid choice for companies looking to manage databases for optimal performance,” said Rich Ptak, co-founder and managing partner at Ptak, Noel & Associates LLC. “Analysis of newly accessible performance metrics gives customers a uniquely informed view into performance trends allowing BMC customers to resolve IT issues more efficiently.”

Poor application performance can be costly on many levels. For example, if a company’s Web site is experiencing slow response times they risk impacting customer satisfaction, or worse, losing customers who might choose a competitor’s site for their business needs. Often finding the cause of a performance problem can be difficult due to the sheer volume of performance data that is available. With Performance Advisor technology, organizations can identify and resolve problems in real time and no longer have to wait for a significant performance reduction to trigger a reaction. They can also use historical reports to evaluate trend information and prevent future problems keeping service levels consistent.

SwissRe, a leading global reinsurer operating in more than 25 countries, is looking forward to the benefits this new solution brings to their business operations.

“We are constantly gathering large amounts of performance data and need to know how to use that data to make the best decisions for improving performance,” says Peter Cartwright, head of Data Services, SwissRe. “BMC SQL Performance using Performance Advisor technology will use the data we are currently capturing with BMC technology already in place and provide the information we need — when we need it.”

“As data grows exponentially and MIPs usage increases, IT organizations are increasingly challenged to reduce CPU cycles and costs while meeting service level commitments,” said Bill Miller, senior vice president and general manager of BMC’s Mainframe Service Management business unit. “The industry-first abilities introduced in the Performance Advisor technology of BMC SQL Performance for DB2 for z/OS provide IT organizations the best of both worlds — efficient data management and significant budget savings leading to optimal return on investment.”

BMC Software has developed administration, performance and recovery tools for DB2 for z/OS since 1988. These products help customers drive the highest availability and efficiency from DB2 for z/OS thereby reducing total cost of ownership.
