MARTHA’S VINEYARD, MA—The owner of a popular café is telling families to stay at home and eat – and doing it in a cookbook that’s rich with photographs of an Island way of life. Carol McManus raised her 5 children as a single mother and was on the verge of bankruptcy and reinvented herself as a coffee shop and bakery owner on Martha’s Vineyard. One of her many claims to fame was creating a Presidential Muffin for Bill Clinton which she served to him when he vacationed on the island. She knew first hand how to not only take risks, but how to feed her 5 children hot meals every night around the dining room table on a budget.

From her coffee and bakery shop experience she took another huge risk and bought a failing restaurant on the island and turned it around to be incredibly successful. She’s the owner of Espresso Love Café in Edgartown. From all her experiences serving and drinking coffee with her guests, feeding them and listening to their stories- Table Talk: Food. Family. Love. A Cookbook (Vineyard Stories, $22.95) was born. This book is a beautiful and evocative look at how we ought to celebrate families today- gone is the era where we all used to sit around the kitchen or dining room table and just talk. McManus, says she’s come to believe , “If you want a happy, healthy family, you should have most of your meals at home, together.”

The cookbook, which will be featured at the gourmet Food Emporium stores in Manhattan because of its family-friendly message, offers recipes, tips, and thoughtful quotes about what food means to us. Table Talk’s strong message is heralded by Jennifer MacLeod, senior vice president for marketing and communications at A&P national headquarters says, “Carol’s simple and delicious meals mean less time preparing and more time sharing at the dinner table, with meals and celebrations where families come together and memories are made.”

McManus was recently featured on “What’s Cooking” on News Channel 12 in Norwalk on September 10. She will also be in New York doing book signing on October 13- New York ’s Food Emporium- 59th street, and October 14 at the Trump Plaza Food Emporium. She will be answering questions for women who are interested in starting their own business or a new career and who may even want to publish a book!
