Low-Cost, Multiformat Signal Monitoring; 3 Gb/s Tools; File-Based Testing

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (IBC2008, Stand 7.G20) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, will show a full range of precision test and measurement solutions that enable broadcast and cable engineers to speed and streamline the quality control process at the 2008 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). With innovative introductions across its Videotek® test and measurement product line, Harris will demonstrate cost-effective, flexible solutions that address today’s key industry challenges, including multiformat signal monitoring, 3 Gb/s infrastructure, file-based workflows and field test applications.

Multiformat Signal Monitoring
Harris has added a new, low-cost, HD signal monitor to its Videotek TVM series of test instruments. The Videotek TVM-4DG multiformat waveform monitor/vectorscope is an easy-to-operate tool for monitoring HD-SDI (1080 and 720) and SD-SDI (525 and 625) signals in a convenient half-rack scope package. The TVM-4DG enables a precision presentation of any one of waveform, vector, picture or Videotek-patented timing screens.

3 Gb/s Test and Measurement
Harris will showcase a 3 Gb/s video input module for its Videotek TVM and VTM product ranges, enabling monitoring of the new progressively scanned, high frame-rate HD formats, including 1080p. Inserted into existing TVM and VTM products, the OPT-3GB enables broadcast and cable engineers to monitor very high-bandwidth 1080p signals, which are double the data rate of existing HD formats like 720p and 1080i. With the inclusion of a 3 Gb/s signal source, the module offers an affordable, field-upgradeable solution, and includes a color-bar generator for verifying 1080p signal paths.

Also 3 Gb/s-capable is the new Videotek AVM-717-3GB, a versatile, space-efficient and self-contained test and measurement solution that provides a complete video and audio monitoring solution for the broadcast and cable engineer. The AVM-717 supports all existing HD formats including 1080p, as well as standard-definition SDI and optionally, composite analog. The all-in-one solution includes all the functionality of the TVM family, a 17-inch LCD monitor and internal speakers for audio monitoring, with a quick and simple installation and set-up process for immediate operation.

File-Based Testing
With the introduction of upgrades to its Videotek QuiC™ media analysis server, Harris provides broadcast engineers with improved, automated measurement techniques to verify comfortable audio levels of the signal as it passes through the distribution chain. The QuiC system now combines loudness monitoring technology with automated quality control and correction tools to form a unique market offering that eliminates unacceptable volume swells for the home viewer.

Portable Devices
Through its Videotek® STAR and OPTO TEST™ range of products, Harris offers broadcast and cable engineers a complete line of handheld solutions for video, audio, transport streams, RF and optical fiber test and measurement. New introductions to the line include ASI-STAR™, a troubleshooting device for pinpointing failures and other problems in an ASI transport stream, offering ETR 290 priority 1 alarms and PSIP table information; and GEN-STAR™, which offers HD-SDI/SD-SDI generation, discrete AES audio output, and genlock capabilities through a reference input.

“The constantly evolving broadcast industry creates a unique set of challenges in test and measurement applications,” said Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communications. “Our Videotek product line is designed to address these specific challenges — providing not only superior performance, but also the flexibility to adapt to varying environments and evolving standards.”
