Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that, according to data from multiple world-leading research firms, it has strengthened its #2 position in IP/MPLS during the second quarter of 2007.

For the fifth straight quarter Alcatel-Lucent was #2 in Ovum-RHK’s Service Provider Edge IP/MPLS segment – with 21% market share - and Synergy Research Group’s Services Edge Routing segment – with 24% market share. In addition and for the first time, Dell’Oro recognized Alcatel-Lucent as the #2 service provider edge router vendor. (Read their announcement: “Service Provider Edge Router Competition Heats Up”).

“The Edge IP/MPLS segment is the fastest growing packet transport segment with 23 percent growth comparing the most recent four quarters to the previous four quarters,” said Mark Seery, VP Switching and Routing, Ovum-RHK. “By comparison, Alcatel-Lucent experienced 48 percent growth in the same period within the Edge IP/MPLS segment.”

The results reflect Alcatel-Lucent’s growing customer base and market adoption of its expanding IP/MPLS portfolio, which has set the industry standard for scalability, quality of service, and high availability – all critical elements of business and residential services for fixed and mobile operators.

“We continued our strong momentum as the fastest growing router vendor,” said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s IP activities. “Demand for 3rd generation IP/MPLS multi-service routers remains strong, driven by triple play subscriber growth and business VPN services, as well as growing success with mobile carriers and increasing traction in emerging markets.”

In recent months, Alcatel-Lucent has announced significant new wins. China Telecom selected Alcatel-Lucent as a strategic partner for its province-wide metro area network optimization project for business and residential IP-based services. China Unicom, Cricket Communications in the U.S., and UMC in the Ukraine also selected Alcatel-Lucent as a partner in their mobile network transformation, in addition to previously announced wins with Vodafone, Verizon Wireless and SFR. Alcatel-Lucent also announced a contract with Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Malaysia’s leading communications service provider, to provide an IP/MPLS network for delivery of mission-critical business services.

Over 180 service providers in more than 70 countries around the world have selected the Alcatel-Lucent IP portfolio as key elements of their IP transformation, including massive, multi-year projects at AT&T, BT and Telstra.
