Pico base stations are small, low-power cellular network nodes that extend the reach of 3G wireless networks to improve consumersí coverage and access to high-speed data. TIís High-Performance, Power-Efficient Baseband Design for Pico Base Stations

By using the industryís highest-performance DSP, TIís 1 GHz TMS320TCI6482, and optimized W-CDMA software libraries, infrastructure OEMs can design a compact baseband solution, thereby dramatically reducing the overall cost of a pico base station solution. For example, a pico base station supporting 32 simultaneous users can be implemented with just two TCI6482 DSPs, compared to previous solutions that were more complex. These small base stations can be deployed in environments such as college campuses, subways, airports and office buildings. OEMs can realize a high channel density solution with TIís 1 GHz DSP because it can efficiently support the complex needs of W-CDMA baseband processing including symbol rate, chip rate and parts of the medium access control (MAC) layer functionality.

The TCI6482 DSP also supports the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) channels that are defined as part of Release 6 of the 3GPP W-CDMA standard. Additionally, smaller femto base station solutions used in personal area networks can be supported on a single DSP to boost 3G network access for individuals and small teams.

TIís TCI6482 DSP supports high performance baseband solutions at a relatively low power of just three watts. Low power is a key metric for this application because small form factor base stations typically do not have fan cooling capabilities found in full size or macro base stations.

Flexible, Programmable Software Baseband Solution

Using a software programmable approach enables OEMs to develop the most flexible baseband solution. TIís software offering includes highly optimized software libraries that form the building blocks of a W-CDMA baseband solution.
