Elementary Schoolers Delight in Making and Launching PET Bottle Rockets at Advantest’s 6th Science Craft Day

Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), has held its 6th Science Craft Day for children at its main research and development facility, Gunma R&D Center (Meiwa-machi, Ora-gun, Gunma). The event on July 7th attracted 143 participants, comprising local elementary school children and their parents.

These children hold the key to Japan’s future manufacturing success, and the aim of this Science Craft Day was to provide them with the opportunity to experience firsthand that scientific crafts and natural science can be fun. The theme of the day was “Make a PET Bottle Rocket and Watch it Take Flight!” and activities included constructing rockets from this commonly-used item, filling the rockets with water and compressing the remaining air inside ready for launch. The children were encouraged by Advantest staff and their parents to think about why the rockets actually fly, and to consider how to propel their rockets long distances. Participants then set about making their own PET bottle rockets, later competing against each other in a contest to see whose rocket flew the furthest.
Through this event, Advantest succeeded in providing not only a chance for parents and children to enjoy scientific crafts together, but also the opportunity for interaction between families.

As part of its commitment to contributing to the local community, Advantest has held six of these Science Craft Days over the last two years. The company recognizes how important children are to the future of the country’s manufacturing industry, and will continue to organize such events in order to incite in them an interest in scientific crafts and natural science
