Scientific-Atlanta Teams with Tropos Networks to Bring Metro-Scale Wi-Fi Mesh to Cable Networks Worldwide

WEBWIRE

— Companies combine expertise in HFC optical and RF electronics as well as Wi-Fi mesh technology to collaborate on the world’s first cable-optimized system solution

ATLANTA, GA – Scientific-Atlanta will expand its hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) solutions for cable operators to include wireless technology by adding Tropos™ Networks’ MetroMesh™ Wi-Fi products to its HFC portfolio. Under the terms of the agreement the companies will collaborate on both strand-mounting, coaxial powering options and fiber converters for the Tropos 5210 MetroMesh routers. These cable-optimized products will be sold through Scientific-Atlanta, enabling cable operators to integrate Tropos’ MetroMesh functionality into HFC systems, thereby providing customers with broadband mobility.

“Research shows that consumers desire and are willing to pay for high speed data connectivity anytime and anywhere. Our fully integrated wireless solution can help cable operators offer city-wide Wi-Fi connectivity to support high-speed data and multimedia applications such as music, video, gaming and, soon, mobile VoIP,” said Bob Scott, Director-Wireless Networking at Scientific-Atlanta. “This technology also well positions operators to meet the growing connectivity needs of many municipal automation applications such as public safety, meter reading and video surveillance.”

“Combining the experience Tropos Networks has amassed in the launch of more than 200 metro-scale Wi-Fi networks in 25 countries with decades of HFC and RF expertise at Scientific-Atlanta will provide cable operators with a high-capacity, low-cost metro Wi-Fi solution,” said Ron Sege, president and CEO of Tropos Networks. “The joint Tropos/Scientific Atlanta solution will enable cable operators to quickly and easily tap into the burgeoning demand for fast, low-cost and simple city-wide wireless broadband networks.”

Tropos’ innovative MetroMesh™ architecture with its patented Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol™ (PWRP) allows network operators to quickly and easily deliver city-wide fixed and mobile multi-megabit connectivity for IP-based voice, video and data applications. Scientific Atlanta will work with Tropos Networks to enhance Tropos MetroMesh routers for easy integration into existing cable HFC networks. The companies will develop both strand-mounting and coaxial powering options for the Tropos 5210 outdoor MetroMesh routers.

To enable cable operators to leverage the inherent data transmission advantage of the HFC network, Scientific Atlanta is developing both hardened optical and coaxial backhaul solutions. All of these products are planned for general availability in the fourth quarter of this calendar year.

Scientific-Atlanta can provide MSOs with the processes, resources, and knowledge that deliver the speed and execution needed to efficiently get their wireless networks up and running. Scientific Atlanta’s SciCare™ Broadband Services Group can supply a wide range of installation and integration services, ranging from installation of a few wireless routers as part of initial technician training up to full city-wide turnkey installations. Also, SciCare will offer network operators with ongoing product life cycle support in conjunction with a service support agreement.
