Cox Target Media (CTM), distributors of the blue VALPAK® coupon envelopes, selected KODAK prepress solutions to power an innovative direct mail printing, packaging and distribution process that will double capacity while cutting production time in half. KODAK SWORD EXCEL Thermal Plates, the KODAK MAGNUS VLF Platesetter and the KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow System will be installed in a new 470,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The familiar blue VALPAK® envelopedelivers savings to some 45 million households throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. CTM, a subsidiary of Cox Newspapers, owned by Cox Enterprises, Inc., is investing more than $200 million in the facility and in an entirely new manufacturing process to improve Valpak’s leading position in the direct mail industry.

“We looked at industries and best practices around the world including those beyond the direct mail and print industries,” said Bill Disbrow, President and CEO, Cox Target Media. “After three years of study, we chose KODAK prepress solutions because their speed, reliability and technological innovation put us in the best position to grow our industry-leading VALPAK brand for the next decade and beyond.”

CTM chose KODAK SWORD EXCEL Thermal Plates to print the 20 billion VALPAK coupons. SWORD EXCEL plates deliver imaging resolutions ranging from 1% to 99% at 200 LPI. Through the elimination of the preheat and postbake cycles, the SWORD EXCEL Plate helps CTM increase processing throughput. Other benefits of the SWORD EXCEL Plate include fast imaging speeds, excellent press chemical resistance, reduced processor maintenance, and maximum durability. The strength and stability of SWORD EXCEL Plates have been enhanced through redesigned plate coatings that are more resistant to both physical wear and harsh chemicals such as UV and EB ink solvents.

The SWORD EXCEL Plates will be imaged on four KODAK MAGNUS Very Large Format (VLF) CTP Devices, which produce quality imaging with repeatability, reliability, improved functionality, and increased speed for large commercial printers such as CTM. Featuring premium KODAK SQUAREspot Thermal Imaging Technology with 10,000 dpi optical resolution, the VLF CTP device delivers the sharpness and consistency to enable high-linescreen or FM screening.

Powering the prepress process for CTM is the KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow System, a powerful solution featuring advanced normalizing, color management, trapping and screening options. PRINERGY EVO Workflow System delivers the features and functionality needed to increase efficiency while reducing the cost of production. It features flexible, customizable configurations to support commercial, publishing, newspaper, and packaging solutions.
