New Graphics Controller from Fujitsu Integrates 32-bit CPU and Graphics Engine on Single Chip

WEBWIRE

Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today added to its industry-leading series of graphics display controllers by introducing the first controller with a 32-bit CPU and graphics engine on a single chip. Fujitsu will feature the new SoC at the annual Telematics Update Conference at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Michigan, May 22-23, booth 47.

The new Fujitsu MB86R01 is a complete system-on-chip designed for high-end, high-volume embedded automotive graphics applications such as on-board and mobile navigation systems, graphical dashboard systems, head-up display (HUD) units, rear-seat entertainment, point-of-sale terminals, and industrial control panels.

The SoC integrates the powerful 32-bit ARM926EJ-S™ CPU core with the Fujitsu high-performance graphics display controller, the MB86296. Built using Fujitsu’s 90nm CMOS process technology, the MB86R01 is optimized for applications requiring maximum CPU performance combined with sophisticated 2D and 3D graphics.

“With the introduction of this powerful and highly integrated system-on-chip, we extend the lead that Fujitsu enjoys worldwide in graphics display control technology,” said Dan Landeck, senior marketing manager for Graphics Display Controllers at FMA’s Embedded Systems Business Group. “Combining the CPU and graphics control capabilities on a single device represents a breakthrough in performance that will benefit a wide range of information and entertainment applications in the vehicle, as well as many industrial and commercial designs.”

The ARM926EJ-S is a fully synthesizable processor with a Jazelle® (Java™ Acceleration) technology-enhanced 32-bit RISC CPU, 16kB instruction cache, 16kB data cache, 16kB ITCM, 16kB DTCM and memory management unit (MMU). The CPU runs all major operating systems and state-of-the-art middleware, including Microsoft Windows CE, QNX, Wind River VxWorks, Linux and Itron.

Fujitsu’s MB86296 graphics processor IC provides requirements for embedded graphics applications like in-car infotainment systems, with a rendering engine for 2D/3D graphic acceleration functions; a geometry processor supporting floating-point transformations for smooth graphics animation; and a dual-display capability (2 x RGB digital output), which allows different content to be shown on two connected screens.

The MB86R01 incorporates an ETM9 (medium) and JTAG ICE interface, 8-channel DMA and 32-bit timers. Core frequency is 320MHz (generated by the on-chip PLL). On-board peripherals include a unified DDR2 memory supporting 320Mbps (up to 128MB), a parallel flash/SRAM host interface with decryption engine, parallel ATA, SD-Card, CAN interface, Media LB, and USB 2.0 (host and function). There is also a DAC and ADC, along with I2C and I2S interfaces, PWM, SPI, UART, GPIO, and an external interrupt.

Other important features include bit-blt and texture mapping units (up to 4096 x 4096); alpha bit-blt and ROP2 functions, and six layers of overlay display. Dual-digital video-input formats include YUV, RGB and ITU656. As with all the Fujitsu GDCs, the new MB86R01 supports built-in alpha blending, anti-aliasing and chroma-keying. Display resolutions range from 320 x 240 up to 1024 x 768.

Pricing and Availability

Packaged in a 484-pin BGA, the device requires a supply voltage of 3.3V (I/O), 1.8V (DDR2), 1.2V (internal), and is designed to operate over a temperature range of -40 to +85°C. The new MB86R01 is available at $39.00 each in sample quantities.
