Dr. Dickie Hill’s “Medicine at Sea” Sets Course for Frankfurt Book Fair 2026

Dr. Dickie Lynn Hill’s “Medicine at Sea: The History and Practice of Medicine in the Field” will be presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2026 by The Maple Staple, with Inks & Bindings as co-exhibitor. Visitors can find the book at Hall 5.1, Stand D86, where copies will be distributed during the October 7 to 11 event at Messe Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The book examines the history, science, and practice of medicine in environments where professional medical care may not be readily available, including ships, wilderness areas, and locations affected by natural disasters. Its practical sections consider situations in which people with limited formal medical education may be called upon to provide care, reflecting circumstances that have existed throughout history.

Hill combines this practical focus with stories illustrating the role medicine has played in human history. Discussions of diseases, organisms, human behavior, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology are woven into a broader examination of how medicine has affected people and historical events.

The book is also designed to be read rather than simply consulted. Heavily illustrated, it uses images alongside the text to make medical concepts and historical accounts more accessible.

Hill’s background closely connects with the subject. His 40-year career in medicine included respiratory therapy, physician assistant training, osteopathic medicine, family practice, and teaching. During his time in the U.S. Navy, he studied tropical medicine in North Africa and undersea medicine in Connecticut and trained in battlefield casualty care. He later taught Medicine at Sea at the California Maritime Academy and founded the Osteopathic Wilderness Medical Society.

For three decades, Hill also lived aboard a 36-foot sailboat with his family while practicing as a board-certified family physician in Benicia, California.
