Jack Hawn’s “Blind Journey: A Journalist’s Memoirs” To Be Displayed at a Book Festival at Printers Row, Chicago

The publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet will showcase “Blind Journey: A Journalist’s Memoirs” by Jack Hawn at a renowned book festival at Printers Row in Chicago. “Blind Journey” chronicles the unlikely origins of Hawn’s writing career, a journey that began during his service in the U.S. Army. Following an impulsive decision to enlist at eighteen, Hawn boarded a bus to Fort Ord, California. While traveling on a midnight bus ride, a chance encounter and conversation with Lieutenant Colonel Amos W. Flemings, the post’s Public Information Officer (PIO), altered his path forever. Flemings liked Hawn’s chatter and offered him a job in the PIO department.

Though the young private initially tried to decline the position to retain his comfortable baggage-checking duties, military orders overrode his hesitation. He was abruptly transferred to PIO headquarters and given an ultimatum by a corporal. The author recalls the high stakes of his new assignment: “He told me to tell you that you have one week to prove yourself. If you don’t, you’ll be on your way to the front lines in Korea as soon as he can cut orders.”

Facing sudden panic, he had to quickly adapt, noting, “I had only just learned to type, seldom read a newspaper, and certainly never tried to write articles for one.” This environment established the groundwork for a prolific 43-year career that culminated in writing for the Los Angeles Times.

Jack Hawn, born January 25, 1930, in Nebraska, grew up in Southern California and served in the U.S. Army. He was married to Charlene for 63 years and has four children, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Years after his wife’s passing, he married for the second time, to Mary Beth Myers-Hawn, on July 11, 2020, and now lives in Sun City West, Arizona.
