Alan Shattock’s Adventurous Memoir Dream Set for Display at the 2026 Manila International Book Fair
The humorous travel memoir about buying a home in Burgundy will be displayed at Booth 2-107 during the 2026 Manila International Book Fair.
Have you ever enjoyed a quiet evening in France and wondered what it would be like to own a home there? Most travelers leave that thought at the café table. Alan Shattock acted on it.
During a visit to Burgundy, the self-described Francophile bought an old French house in the village of Charrey-sur-Saône, near Dijon. He had little time to prepare, and no idea how many surprises were waiting for him.
His memoir, “Dreaming in Dijon and the Aftermath,” follows the strange coincidences that led him to the house and the adventures that came after the purchase. There are confusing journeys, renovation problems, household disasters, and plenty of moments when helpful villagers came to the rescue.
The result is a warm and funny account of turning a holiday dream into a second home, and slowly becoming part of a French community. The book celebrates the friendship and neighborly spirit that Shattock found in Burgundy.
Alan Shattock is an English-born medical scientist who has lived and worked in Ireland for decades. Before entering travel writing, much of his work appeared in scientific journals and publications about motoring and motor-racing history. “Dreaming in Dijon and the Aftermath” is his first travel memoir. Today, he describes his life as being divided somewhere between Connemara, Ireland, and France.
The Eagle Literary is proud to represent Alan Shattock to showcase his esteemed humorous memoir at the Manila International Book Fair. Visitors to the fair are invited to explore his book, that provide an opportunity for a wider audience to discover stories shaped by surviving a second home. You can find this book at Booth 2-107 under the exhibit of The Eagle Literary. It is also available on various online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Alibris.
Come for the French dream. Stay for the reminder that some dreams are meant to be acted upon.
