The book was inspired by meaningful parts of Garcia’s own experiences, including caring for a pet iguana, reading historical fiction about the Aztecs, visiting family in Mexico City, and remembering her late husband’s love of playing the guitar. Garcia is a retired special education teacher who worked with students in Grades 3 through 5 with moderate to severe needs. Her dedication to education earned her recognition as Teacher of the Year for her school district during the 2007-2008 academic year. Her classroom experience is reflected in the book’s encouraging message that every child possesses unique abilities and the potential to grow.

An enthusiastic lover of nature and wildlife, Garcia also enjoys sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and caring for injured birds. Her connection with animals adds warmth and authenticity to Señor Iguana’s memorable journey.
