“Adapt and Overcome, Dear: Oh, Victoria!” is a compelling historical novel that weaves action, romance, and mystery against the backdrop of the 1970s, capturing a turbulent era with heart and intensity. Set in a period marked by military challenges and societal change, the story follows a Kentucky woman and a man from the New York Metro area who meet at The Ohio State University.
What begins as friendship soon deepens into an intimate bond as they exchange letters during Officer Candidate School and Basic Combat training. Through their correspondence, readers witness their love and determination grow while they face trials that include murders, grand theft, assaults, and even suicide.
Bey’s military experience enriches the narrative, bringing authenticity to the dangers, discipline, and pressures soldiers faced in this era. The novel explores the complex balance between personal ambition, romance, and duty, as careers and marriages hang in the balance. Through it all, the central theme resonates clearly: the power of resilience, love, and the human spirit to “adapt” and “overcome.”
For those seeking a story of courage, suspense, and enduring love, “Adapt and Overcome, Dear: Oh, Victoria!” is a must-reads that bridge history with the timeless challenges of the human heart.

Brendan Bey is a writer who served in the US Army and heard many of the sergeant’s stories of the acts of murder, grand theft, and assaults of soldiers on the bases or posts. There was a story of a lone soldier on a three-hour pass who was found dead with a crushed skull next to a barracks hall. Another story was about a supply sergeant murdered to cover up theft of government property. This was a dismal time in the Army after the Vietnam War. Beating recruits is immoral and unproductive.
