Self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet will put Cecilia K Hoffman’s “Family Colors” on display as part of their book exhibit during the 2026 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The outdoor literary festival, which is the largest of its kind in the country, will take place on April 18-19, 2026, at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
In “Family Colors,” Tawny Brown wishes that she could have children of her own, but in her late twenties, she had battled ovarian cancer, and she ended up having a hysterectomy. The cancer did not come back up until now, but she has lost any possibility of having children of her own.
When Tawny gets laid off from work, she gives herself one week to calm her emotions before starting her search for a new job. She goes on a trip to Seattle with little dachshund Parker so she could talk to her mother. She has a plan, but as soon as she sees her mother, the words all come out in a rush. “Lord, Almighty, child! You just lost your job, and you’ll find another one, is all. Something will come up for you, it always does.” Those words give Tawny the comfort she is seeking.
Tawny Brown’s new job is to be a nanny/therapist to a beautiful little Vietnamese girl named Lily, who is mute from trauma. After losing her mother to a car accident, Lily’s guardian is now her Uncle Ken. Before she knows it, Tawny finds herself attracted to her employer.
