Poetic Meditations at Altitude Ascends to the Spotlight Stage of the London Book Fair 2026

In the final edition of his acclaimed book, “Reflections on Mountaineering: A Journey Through Life as Experienced in the Mountains” (Fifth Edition, Revised and Expanded), with Addendum: (2024). The author interprets his mountaineering experiences as transcending the scope of a risk sport and having meaning as a guide for exploring the quandaries and nuances encountered in everyday life. This Edition, a collection of 148 narrative-style poems meant to be readily accessible by the general public, will be positioned as a standout piece of The Maple Staple Bookstore Booth at the 2026 London Book Fair.

Written in a variety of poetic styles, ranging from rhyming verse, blank verse, to prose-poetry, the Book derives from the author’s 30 years of mountaineering and his discussions with other climbers. Instead of emphasizing the technical intricacies involved in the sport of climbing, Alan V. Goldman’s poems dwell in the silent spaces and consequences of a climber’s choices, such as the hesitation before traversing crevasses, the awareness of a myriad of potential pitfalls, and the quiet, subtle reflection that so often comes upon a climber only after the performance of an act that leads to either success or failure.

Though arising out of the world of mountaineering, the poems in this collection resonate far beyond the realm of climbing. The poems’ insights into a climber’s self-doubt, ultimate recognition of resilience, and journey of self-discovery of his limits relate intimately to the challenges that many people encounter in various aspects of “everyday” life, and in the overall experience of the human condition. The Author offers a unique viewpoint in evaluating the significance of climbing in relation to the struggles that every person must confront at some time in their life. He graduated from Horace Mann School in 1975, Harvard College in 1979, and finally from Harvard Law School in 1982. Also, in 1979, he was elected a member of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Alpha Chapter. While pursuing his climbing interests, Goldman worked as a lawyer for many years and is now retired. His legal training helped sharpen his sensitivity to issues involving morality, judgment, and acceptance of the consequences of one’s actions, a theme that occurs in his poems.
