Charles E. Webb’s Gripping Fiction to Ignite Suspense and Action at the London Book Fair 2026
Exploring global arms trade and revolution, Charles E. Webb’s acclaimed work weaves through moral and political insights

In his riveting novel, “Downfall and Freedom: A Novel about the Arms Trade, South Africa, and the KwaZulu,” author Charles E. Webb delves into the complex ways in which personal griefs intersect with vast global dynamics. At the London Book Fair 2026, this book is set to elevate political and historical fiction.
Taking place across continents and decades, the narrative centers on two men whose early experiences with violence have influenced their lives. Clarence VanDyke Jackson, an African American who grew up in south-central Mississippi, and John Wesley Zooma, a full member of the Zulu tribe in Natal, South Africa, both experienced terrible incidents that left them with lifelong wounds. Despite the distance and differences that divide them, both are determined to pursue vengeance, setting out on paths that will ultimately intersect.
Years later, Jackson’s participation in the illicit global armaments trade reveals their relationship. As Jackson develops a risky cross-border weapons trafficking enterprise, Zooma grows more conscious of KwaZulu-Natal’s political unrest and looming rebellion. Their worlds are connected through the arms trade, which draws individual aspirations into the larger forces of power and revolution.
Jackson’s path takes a dramatic turn when he finds himself captivated by a Brazilian woman, leading him to leave behind the arms trade. Before departing, he orchestrates one last arrangement with his German associate, Carl Durnbacher. The choice sets off a chain of lethal consequences as Durnbacher opts to eliminate Jackson instead of embracing the end of their alliance. Meanwhile, tensions rise in South Africa, as Zooma leverages his influence to assist Michael Stephens—a man who once rescued him—in fleeing the country with his family, ensuring he does not fall prey to the escalating political violence.
Through overlapping plots and morally challenging choices, “Downfall and Freedom: A Novel about the Arms Trade, South Africa, and the KwaZulu” by Charles E. Webb provides a sobering look at the human cost of the arms trade and the thin line separating complicity and survival during turbulent times.
