The Associated Press today introduced AP Verify, a verification dashboard combining AI-powered features with established digital verification tools to transform the way newsrooms authenticate online photos, videos and other digital content.

The unified web-based interface features:

  • AI-driven capabilities such as geolocation, object and landmark detection, and transcription
  • An AI chatbot assistant
  • Generative AI text detection
  • Core verification tools including reverse image search, frame-by-frame video analysis and social listening
  • Ability to store work and share across teams

“In an era of rampant misinformation and digitally altered content, verification is more essential than ever,” said Gianluca D’Aniello, AP senior vice president and chief technology officer. “AP Verify equips journalists with the essential tools they need to assess online content quickly and accurately all in one place – whether it’s identifying the source of a photo, analyzing video or vetting text. This platform has become central to AP’s verification workflows, and we’re very pleased to extend these capabilities across the industry to support more efficient and reliable content authentication.”

AP Verify was developed by AP journalists to meet growing demands for digital verification in newsgathering.

AP Verify is used daily across AP’s global news operations, supporting teams covering breaking news, misinformation and investigative reporting. Recent examples include:

  • Securing original Texas flood footage by using reverse search and tools to contact the videographer and secure permission.
  • Verifying a viral meteor sighting in South Carolina by tracing video frames back to a social media post and connecting with the original source.
  • Searching for a key eyewitnesses video from the Charlie Kirk assassination by analyzing social content and using tools to confirm the source.
  • Vetting a video showing violence surrounding a soccer match in Israel that was actually from Greece a month earlier.

Developed according to strict AP editorial standards, AP Verify is grounded in workflows and offers training on verification best practices. All tools on AP Verify are reviewed and vetted by AP journalists specializing in UGC verification.
