Robert W. Janek’s “Polio: A Personal Spiritual Journey” Shares a Story of Resilience at Frankfurt Book Fair 2025

“Polio: A Personal Spiritual Journey: How a Physical Difference Impacts One’s Life Trajectory in Challenging and Decisive Ways” by Robert W. Janek will be featured at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025, running 15–19 October at Messe Frankfurt. The book will be exhibited at Hall 5.1, Stand D86, within the showcase of The Maple Staple and Inks & Bindings, who together are presenting over 150 independent titles.

Janek’s story begins in west Texas, where at just eleven years old he was stricken with bulbar polio in the summer of 1952. The memoir chronicles not only the initial ordeal of hospitalization but also the enduring physical, social, and spiritual consequences of living with partial facial paralysis. Written with honesty and compassion, the book speaks directly to those who live with visible differences, as well as the caregivers, families, and communities who support them.

With the resurgence of polio in recent years, Janek’s reflections carry renewed urgency and resonance. His voice offers reassurance to those navigating disability or difference: that it is natural to feel discouraged at times, but also possible to find meaning, connection, and dignity in the midst of struggle. More than a personal account, the book becomes a resource for conversation, understanding, and healing across generations.

Living in San Angelo, Texas with his wife Jena, Janek has devoted this work not only to fellow survivors of the 1950s but also to future readers who may encounter the disease or its echoes. His perspective bridges past and present, reminding us of both the fragility and resilience of the human spirit.

The Maple Staple, in its second year at Frankfurt, and Inks & Bindings, co-exhibiting for the first time, will highlight Janek’s book alongside memoirs, poetry, fiction, and wellness guides. Their program will also feature giveaways, author spotlights, and an audiobook listening corner.
