James Hillman’s “Religion & Science” Sparks a Conversation Between Faith and Reason

Discussions about faith and science often echo with the voices of experts and theorists. But James Hillman, author of “Religion & Science: Thoughts of a Common Jim,” believes that wisdom is born not from argument but from thoughtful observation and reflection.

His book will be featured at the Frankfurt Book Fair, running October 15–19, 2025, at The Maple Staple’s exhibit in Hall 5.1 D86, where it offers a grounded perspective on one of humanity’s most enduring debates.

Rather than taking sides, Hillman explores what drives belief—how emotion shapes logic and how empathy can foster understanding. He doesn’t claim expertise, only honesty, describing himself not as a scholar or theologian but as an ordinary man who has spent a lifetime reflecting on how people talk about faith and reason.

That modest stance defines his voice. A retired U.S. Army sergeant who served in Desert Storm with the Combat Air Brigade of the 3rd Armored Division, James Hillman approaches his subject with the discipline of a soldier and the curiosity of a lifelong learner. After earning a bachelor’s degree in computers and spending over 20 years with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, he found himself drawn into conversations with friends—Christian and non-Christian alike—that gradually inspired his book.
