Randy Merritt has spent most of his career in banking, and then a bit of time in the waste business before retiring. However, this belies his love for the great outdoors, going on deer hunts, and appreciating the history of the American frontier. And to further show his appreciation, he even published a novel titled “And Life Goes On.” Merritt will soon have the book showcased at an upcoming book festival at Printers Row in Chicago, on September 6-7, 2025.

Not many would think Randy W. Merritt is a historical fiction author based on his credentials. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University before going on a 20-year career in banking. Still, there might be some hints, including his love for deer hunting and his deep appreciation for the history of America’s old western frontier.

It was that same appreciation that led to the publishing of his own historical novel titled “And Life Goes On.” It tells the story of the fictional Patton family starting at the very end of the Civil War. And much like many families at the time, the war’s end didn’t really mean things were looking up.

The novel chronicles the family’s origins among the wagon trails as well as brushes with outlaw gangs. Still, through dedication, strength, and love, the novel eventually shows how they overcome their circumstances and leave a legacy that lasts into the 21st century.

“And Life Goes On” is a book that’s aimed at fans of westerns as well as niche works that detail a family line throughout some of the most iconic periods of American history. Merritt has already arranged for the book’s exhibit at several book showcases in the Midwest.

The book will be displayed at a book festival at Printers Row, at South Dearborn Street, from Ida B. Wells to Polk Street, in Chicago’s Printing House Row District, on September 6-7, 2025.
