Eater, the preeminent destination for food trends and restaurant coverage, is launching Off Menu, its new annual tentpole celebrating the pervasive influence of food and dining on the culture writ large. This year’s Off Menu experience will be timed to Eater’s 20th anniversary, reflecting on the last two decades as a defining period of food culture in this country, and will culminate in a ticketed event presented by Capital One Dining on September 20 at STORIED in New York City. Additional partners include international airline Cathay Pacific, Coca-Cola, Impossible Foods, Vitamix, and more.

Off Menu kicks off with Eater’s summer-long campaign celebrating the award-winning brand’s 20th anniversary, beginning July 22. Featuring a robust online hub of editorial packages and videos, Eater will look back at 2005 and beyond — the restaurants, the trends, the chefs, the media — and how it has influenced what we eat today. In addition, Eater will partner with beloved restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in New York City and Los Angeles on limited edition re-releases of some of their most iconic dishes. Participating spots include Carnitas Ramirez, Hamburger America, Winner, and more.

Eater will also release its first-ever, special edition print magazine, which will feature a gathering of culinary and cultural tastemakers such as Padma Lakshmi, Samin Nosrat, Eli Sussman, Camari Mick, and others paired together for one-on-one conversations. It will also include “The 38 Most Essential Restaurants of the Last 20 Years” — a list of the best and most influential restaurants of the last two decades, along with a reported piece on the rise and fall of the American foodie, a deep dive into food delivery, food-driven photo essays, playful retrospectives, quizzes, games, infographics, and more.

“Since its humble beginnings as a New York City restaurant blog, Eater has covered local dining scenes, from food trucks to starred restaurants and everything in between,” says editor-in-chief Stephanie Wu. “We’re thrilled to celebrate two decades of coverage dedicated to where to eat and why it matters, and remind devoted Eater fans of how far we’ve come — and how much more there is to look forward to.”

“Over the past two decades, Eater has established itself as the most influential culinary platform for chefs, restaurants, brands, creators, and hungry diners,” says Geoff Schiller, Vox Media’s chief revenue officer. “With Off Menu, and in collaboration with our brand partners, we’re bringing that influence to life across web, social, experiential, and at point of sale, celebrating Eater’s role as a pioneer within the dining industry and beyond.”

In addition to Off Menu, Eater and Capital One Dining are throwing dinner parties exclusively available for Capital One customers, hosted by chef Nick Curtola at The Four Horsemen in Brooklyn and chef Stephanie Izard at Girl & The Goat in Chicago. Tickets for the dinner party experiences can be found exclusively on Capital One Dining. Eligible Capital One customers can also unlock coveted reservations through Capital One Dining, and all users can explore and book editor-approved restaurants via the Eater app, from local gems to Michelin-starred fine dining.

Future Off Menu events will focus on other timely and impactful themes within the food, restaurant, and hospitality industries. Tickets for Eater Off Menu will be available starting Tuesday, August 5. Sign up here to be the first to know when tickets go on sale.
