The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet will feature the book “Artistic Individuality: A Study of Selected Artist Novels, ca. 1910–2010” by Zivile Gimbutas at an upcoming book festival at Printers Row. This premier literary event will take place on September 6-7, 2025, in Chicago’s historic Printing House Row District.
“Artistic Individuality” is a deep and illuminating exploration of the artistic soul. The book is a scholarly yet accessible study that examines how individuality emerges in key artist novels through the lenses of childhood, sensuality, nature, and the creative impulse.
Gimbutas selects seven seminal works spanning over a century, including “The Song of the Lark” by Willa Cather, “Lost Son” by M. Allen Cunningham, “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by James Joyce, “The Moon and Sixpence” by W. Somerset Maugham, “I Capture the Castle” by Dodie Smith, “Seek My Face” by John Updike, and “To the Lighthouse” by Virginia Woolf. In each, she traces how characters discover their unique voices in harmony with the natural world and defiance of social convention.
“Artistic Individuality” proposes that artistic individuality is not rebellion for its own sake, but a profound recognition of self as a unique fragment of a larger whole, most often realized in communion with nature and expressed through aesthetic experience.
Zivile Gimbutas brings to this work her deep knowledge of literature and her lifelong dedication to the arts and humanities. Her approach combines rigorous analysis with a reverent sensitivity to the inner lives of artists.
“Artistic Individuality” is a timely and timeless contribution to literary criticism and a powerful testament to the enduring human need for self-expression.
