Sci-Fi Adventure Written by Former Nuclear Power Researcher Claudia K Leber Set for Exhibit at Frankfurt Book Fair 2025
Some of the most exciting science fiction stories come from people who have worked directly in the field. Claudia K Leber is one of the most recent examples, having just published a novel about hydrogen smugglers in a future where nuclear fusion becomes a reality. Titled “Hydrogen Runner,” the book will be displayed at the upcoming Frankfurt Book Fair 2025 happening this October. Despite retiring from science, Leber remains excited to showcase how it went to inspire her own literary work.
“This was a good story with some excellent twists. However, there were several annoying things that should have been caught in proofreading. Words that should not be pluralized and some wrong words. The explanation of the collectors was a lot of information delivered very quickly in contrast to all the rest of the book which read like young adult fiction because of the simple language lack of detailed description simple dialogue and moderate pace.” - R.W. Beaulieu
One of the defining traits of science fiction is how its share of new ideas is often within proximity of the latest breakthroughs. And for retired researcher Claudia K Leber, that is certainly true.
Leber is the author of “Hydrogen Runner,” a science fiction adventure that draws from her own knowledge and experience in nuclear energy research. Having graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of California in Irvine, she had gone on to apply her expertise at the university’s own nuclear research reactor.
Along with some additional studies in geology, much of her experience would eventually inspire the ideas in her novel, which is set in the distant future. In “Hydrogen Runner,” humanity on Earth appears to have achieved peak civilization when nuclear fusion kicks off an energy revolution. Rather than harmful greenhouse gases, everything now relies on simple hydrogen for fuel.
Still, out in the vastness of space, pockets of a more uncivilized humanity have formed. Opportunistic conglomerates, mercenaries, and space pirates are on the lookout for rich deposits of hydrogen so that this new energy age stays topped up.
Leber is very much excited to share the vision she had been writing “Hydrogen Runner.” This year, she has even arranged to have her book exhibited at the upcoming 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair (also known as Frankfurt Buchmesse), one of the largest book fairs in the world. Despite being retired, she still has much love for science and hopes her book will inspire both future scientists and authors alike.
