“Abigail Thornton’s rollercoaster of a story is truly captivating to read. From hallucinations leading to self-harm, to the political power plays of the staff and the court case held to fight for her needs — this book is full of excitement and emotions.”
The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet hosted the book signing session of Jo Ellen Capps-Layne, author of “Laughter at Dawn,” at the 2025 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB) last April, 27 2025.
Celebrating its 30th year at the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles, USA, the LA Times Festival of Books is one of the most important literary festivals in the country. It brings together storytellers, artists, and publishers to celebrate the beauty of literature, art, and culture.
“Laughter at Dawn” tells the story of Abigail (Abby) Thornton, a young woman with intellectual disabilities facing an undiagnosed psychiatric condition. After enduring abuse in various foster placements, she arrives at the Greenway Developmental Center, where she experiences harmful hallucinations. The Center’s director, Belle Farthing, intends to eliminate Abby.
Incidents of fire, murder, and strangulation mark Abby’s life. As her court case unfolds, her psychologist, Sally McGraw, and social worker, Christine Connelly, advocate for her rights and push for legal action against the State of Virginia for failing to provide appropriate care.
“Laughter at Dawn” shines a light on the injustices Abby faces, the political maneuvering of the staff, their sexual indiscretions, and the empathetic support offered by the few staff members who genuinely care about her well-being.
Despite the moody weather at the venue, author Jo Ellen Capps-Layne still took time to share her story and signed copies of “Laughter at Dawn” at the ReadersMagnet booth.
