The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet is proud to showcase Deborah Price Lechmanski’s book “Growing up on Shelter Island: Happy Times and Sad Times” at the 2025 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB). The book event will take place on April 26-27, 2025, at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, USA.
First held in 1996, the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is the largest literary festival in the country, attracting over 150,000 attendees annually. The free, two-day outdoor event brings together authors, publishers, vendors, and book lovers for a celebration of the literary world, featuring panel discussions, storytelling, and performances, fostering deeper connections between writers and readers through thoughtful, engaging literary conversations.
Lechmanski’s “Growing up on Shelter Island” lovingly recounts her deep connection with the island’s landscape, especially Wades Beach, which seemed to find her time and again, even as others favored the “main beach.” Her anecdotes include tales of raising animals, heartfelt memories of her father, and the unique island tradition of having two separate fire departments, one in which she proudly served and another where her father was a member.
Lechmanski’s storytelling celebrates the small wonders of everyday life and the strength found in community and nature.
“Growing up on Shelter Island” is more than a narrative; it’s a nostalgic and uplifting tribute to a simpler time, a quiet place, and the power of memories. A must-read for avid readers of heartfelt personal stories and lovers of island life, Lechmanski’s debut is sure to capture hearts at this year’s literary festivals.

This book is full of Deborah Price’s memories growing up on a small island. The story starts when she was three and a half years old, and it shows how she coped with life’s ups and downs.
Her dad had an accident off Wades Beach, and that beach is mentioned a few times throughout the book. It is funny how, growing up there, Deborah always seemed to end up at that beach. It is a nice beach, one of the two main beaches on the island. But it seemed like all her friends and all the islanders went to the other beach.
The book is full of times she spent raising animals in her spare time. She was a member of one of the two fire departments there, while her dad was a member of the other fire department.
There are stories about many animals and how they filled her life. She treasures their memories still today. This book takes her through her different jobs and things that made her happy throughout her life, up until the present.
