Siemens seeks to inform customers about possible non conformance in power supply cables for variable-speed drives

WEBWIRE

Siemens has identified a potential issue involving Siemens power supply cables typically used in connection with industrial applications of variable-speed drives. With these cables, there is a possibility that the plastic insulation of the individual conductors can age prematurely causing the cables to no longer meet all specified functional and protection specifications. Should this situation arise, there is the possibility for serious personal injury in addition to property damage.

The affected cables were manufactured by an external cable producer for Siemens between 1996 and July 1999. The specific cables are the following:
• Protoflex EMV 4 Plus UV 2YSLCYK-J 600/1000V and
• Protoflex EMV 2YSLCY-J 600/1000V,
Deliveries of these cables to customers from stock may have occurred as late as 2001.

On becoming aware of the situation in October 2006, Siemens immediately informed all known customers and gave them instructions about what safety measures should be taken in the systems concerned. This was undertaken by Siemens even though the warranty period had likely expired.

Notwithstanding Siemens’ efforts to contact all known customers, these cables were not only sold in conjunction with Siemens industrial applications but also through the wholesale trade; therefore, Siemens has not been able to identify all potential end-users. Via this “cable product recall” Siemens is publicly seeking to inform and contact any unknown users of Protoflex cables with the type designations given above that may have been purchased directly from Siemens or through wholesalers within the stated time period. Any user of the affected cables is asked to contact Siemens at:
PTD Customer Support Center, support.energy@siemens.com, phone: +49 180 524 7000, reference: “Protoflex”, for further assistance in replacing affected cables.
