Philip Ripley Ward was born in Massachusetts, but his family moved to Colorado when he was a child. He loved playing golf and baseball. In 1978, he attended Golf Digest Instruction School, studying under Bob Toski. He played and taught for over 40 years. Now mostly retired, he enjoys golf, puzzles, playing guitars, and spending time with his family. He now regards himself as a golf specialist more so than a professional.
