Katherine L. Myers-Kohn’s Book on the Magical Origin Myth of Snapdragons Will Be Displayed at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023

Katherine L. Myers-Kohn was born and raised in Southern California and grew up to be a registered nurse. Throughout her life, she developed a deep love for nature and a fascination for exotic creatures thanks to her father’s ties to wild animal societies. She was also a prolific writer, nurturing her talent by penning stories as an outlet for her feelings.

Now retired and a grandmother, she has finally taken the big leap to publish a full children’s book “There Are Dragons in the Garden.” This book will be exhibited by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA.

The story is a beautiful work of fiction that acts as an origin myth for the flowery snapdragons in people’s yards. It begins long ago when the world was steeped in magic and myth. At that time, there lived a very old and mighty wizard named Arthur.

Arthur was charged with a single yet wondrous task: to care for all the dragons in the world. The dragons came in all shapes and sizes, from land, air, or sea. No matter what kind they were, he took care of each one with dedication and attention to detail.

What happened then? Where are the dragons now? Was Arthur always alone in such a world? Myers-Kohn gives the answers to all these questions using a classic storybook style that’s ideal for reading it aloud to children. They also come with colorful illustrations that inspire a lot of wonder and imagination alongside her words.

“There Are Dragons in the Garden” is certainly a fulfillment of her hopes of creating a story that many parents can read to their kids. Katherine L. Myers-Kohn, more often known as Kathie. She was born and raised in Southern California. She is now a retired registered nurse, a teacher, wife, mother, grandmother and a teller of stories. Her boundless imagination was encouraged by her mother and paternal grandfather. She would write stories and poems on any bit of paper she could find. Her writing was an outlet and was a way of coping with feelings and emotions when she was young.

As Kathie grew into adulthood, she found that her stories could be helpful to others who needed a tender voice, touch or just a listening ear. Those who were dealing with the same fears, anxieties and sadness that she had dealt with in the past. Kathie is a lover of all living thing and has a deep respect for nature.

As a child, Kathie had the usual pets like dogs, cats, hamsters, etc. But how many children can say they had a Margay (a small wild cat from Central and South America) for a family pet. Her father also introduced her to all kinds of animals only seen in zoos through his contacts in wild animal societies of Southern California like spider monkey, wolves, a pair or mountain lions and a tiger. She was never taught to fear these animals, rather to respect them and their power.

This story is a product of her early writing and was inspired by her paternal grandfather. Kathie hopes her book “There Are Dragons in the Garden” will provide wonder and joy to the reader, whether the reader is a child or an adult introducing reading to their own child or grandchildren.
