“Discover how to turn Pain into Power, and Power into Purpose.”

The exhibit booths at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023, which will take place on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, will have no shortage of authors who had braved many battles with cancer or some other tragic terminal disease. Diona Joiner Wheeler is perhaps one of the few who can say she’s conquered not just one or two but five dangerous illnesses throughout her life.

The author describes her most difficult experiences in the book “Battle Scars, My Life is Worth Fighting For! I Am a Warrior: Learn how I survived 5 deadly illnesses.” In the preface, Wheeler gives credit first to God and then to her determination to live through it all. Because of the way that these illnesses came one after another, Wheeler firmly believed that the key was never giving up and trusting in God’s hand in her healing.

It started back in 2014 when she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. Then, there came heart failure which had become a side effect of the cancer treatments.

The heart failure then led to a stroke, leaving her body wired to an LVAD. During her stay at the hospital, it was also discovered that she had sepsis.

The problems didn’t stop even two years later, as it was found that her heart medications had resulted in kidney failure as well.

Yet, despite all these grave threats to her life, she lives today and sees it as her purpose to share her testimony as a Motivational Speaker to empower other women who face similar, dire predicaments in their health.
