Melita Thorpe’s Africa-Inspired Political Thriller Displayed at LibLearnX 2023 Exhibit

Melita Thorpe’s suspense novel “Ransom Theft Love: Journey from Zanzibar to Somalia” may sound like the standard action-thriller, but the title belies a highly immersive novel that puts Africa’s urgent, real-world issues front and center. The book, which spreads awareness of the continent’s still-untold plights, was recently exhibited at this year’s LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience.

Before setting on her writing career, Melita Wade Thorpe lived the exciting life of an international traveler, leading astronomy tours in various continents, with Africa as her personal favorite. This, in turn, is what inspired “Ransom Theft Love: Journey from Zanzibar to Somalia,” which was recently exhibited at the LibLearnX 2023.

The novel’s premise sounds simple enough. It follows Dr. Anne Wadsworth, a tour expert who had Africa as her second home. But after arriving at Zanzibar to be a keynote speaker for its Human Rights Conference, she is suddenly thrust into danger. Mysterious assailants take her captive before bringing her on a dangerous journey to Somalia.

The story spans the great length of the East African coast and draws upon Thorpe’s own travel experience. Against the backdrop of vast plains and desert nights under the stars, the truth of Anne’s kidnapping slowly reveals itself.

Yet, while the book is filled with the gripping twists, turns, and intrigue of political suspense, it also sets itself apart with hard-hitting commentary on Africa’s real-life struggles. This includes not only the political instability from within but also the constant exploitation of the land from outside parties. In the opening chapter, the book instantly touches on the topic of slavery before going on to the continent’s present-day human rights situation.

And with LibLearnX’s focus on sharing new ideas and new stories, Thorpe found it the ideal event to exhibit her book with the hopes of spreading more awareness of Africa’s plight through her writing.

Melita Wade Thorpe is a native of Mississippi and a writer who draws on her experience of international travel. Ransom, Theft, Love is her first novel. She grew up in the deep south before moving to California. Her tour operator career included leading astronomers to Africa on twenty-three tours. She is a Fellow Verger of the Episcopal Church Verger’s Guild and has authored 9 liturgical dramas. She lives in Ellisville, Mississippi.
