The memoir “Haff” Breed tells the author’s life as a mixed-race boy, now a man, growing up on an Indian reservation and struggling with family dysfunction and the temptation to abandon his heritage before ultimately returning to it as an adult and trying to reclaim his identity as a part of the Jicarilla Apache people.

Leon recounts his youth and his journey back to his tribe to serve as a local political representative and tribal council member. For the sake of the people of his tribe, both now and in the future, he strives to encourage innovative ideas, promotion of the laws, and new ways to enhance economic development, despite the obstacles he must overcome along the way. He soon learns that the previous leaders of his tribe are to blame for the misfortune of his people. The author was instrumental in developing, proposing, and winning approval for the first tribally held holding company.

Leon K. Reval is a Native American tribal rights advocate, a member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, and a former elected leader of the nation’s Council. He has led many initiatives for the country, from asserting its sovereignty and protecting tribal assets to improving the general welfare of his people.

He helped spearhead litigation against the United States for its breach of trust responsibilities and mismanagement of tribal resources, which resulted in the United States’ payment of over $120 million to the nation. In addition to being a dedicated father of three children, he is an accomplished public speaker. He works tirelessly to advance Native American rights throughout his community and the Indian country.
