“Dense, meticulous, and packed with plenty of suspense… An ingenious and addicting read.” The Prairies Book Review

Interested in novels about global warming and climate disruption with elements of science fiction, adventure, mystery, and action? Make sure you pick up “Guardians of the Solar Shield: Earth’s Climate Mirrors Under Attack 2029-37” (Strategic Path Press; 2021) by Sam Bleicher.

“Guardians of the Solar Shield” reveals how geoengineering to mitigate the destructive effects of climate change could be manipulated – and how dangerous the consequences would be when criminal elements resort to extortion and murder to protect themselves.

The story takes place in the 2030s, in a world already being altered by global warming. To reduce further destruction caused by Earth’s overheating, the UN launches the Solar Shield Project (SSP), a global system of 480 Earth-shadowing mirrors that deflect a portion of the sun’s energy from reaching Earth. The SSP Corps has the responsibility for managing the system.

The SSP, however, is capable of manipulation by unscrupulous individuals. When SSP Corps Officer Kelly O’Rourke discovers unexplained realignment of a handful of the mirrors, she asks Jay Bhattachar, Commander Robert Fauré’s assistant, for advice and help. They soon find themselves working to defeat insiders skirting the rules and outsiders distorting the Project’s capabilities for financial gain. Two years earlier, Commander Fauré had diverted one mirror’s shadow at an SSPC board member’s urging, without following formal procedures, to save certain tourist resorts. Now Fauré hopes to silence Kelly as he struggles to unravel his hasty action.

Meanwhile, two Manhattan con men trick a Wuhan computer firm into hacking MSTY, the SSPC’s master computer. Their resulting ability to move individual mirrors enables a profitable extortion scheme. When Fauré discovers the hack, he realizes the entire SSPC and his own career are at risk. He sends Jay, Kelly, and UN Security Officer Cheng to track down the criminals. They confront perilous dangers in New York, Wuhan, and Moscow.

Readers and book reviewers have acclaimed “Guardians of the Solar Shield” for its believable and captivating character and plot development, storytelling, and treatment of technology and climate disruption.

“Bleicher’s writing is assured, prose crisp,” read a review in BookView Review, “and he executes the intricate plot, which consists of several mini-subplots and a large cast of characters, with perfect ease while navigating a horde of shocking revelations.

“The narrative ties that bind various players in the story stay intact over the novel’s course, and the intriguing, realistically portrayed interplay among the main characters, especially the romantic tension that lingers between Jay and Kelly, keeps the reader thoroughly invested.”

“I found ‘Guardians of the Solar Shield’ very refreshing,” wrote Francis Mont in a review for Readers’ Favorite, “quite different from the usual depressing post-apocalyptic stories that dwell on suffering and dying. This is not a doom-and-gloom story but rather intelligent problem-solving with the background of human stupidity, greed, intrigue, and political opportunism.”

The Prairies Book Review says: “Bleicher does a good job building suspense as he gradually reveals the intricate connections among the top players and ties the multiple disparate threads of the storyline together. Extremely complicated and thoroughly exciting, the novel should easily find a home with the lovers of intricately detailed conspiracy thrillers.”
