At the beginning of May, the first episode of a new video series from the Mercedes-Benz Museum went online on Instagram TV. “Exclusive insights: The cars of the Mercedes-Benz Museum” presents seven dream cars from the Museum’s permanent exhibition, focusing on details that normally remain hidden: http://mb4.me/exclusive-insights-igtv

The series can be seen on the Instagram channels @mercedesbenzmuseum and @mercedesbenz. This dynamic peek behind the scenes has already been very well received by followers: Only a few days after the series went online on Instagram TV, the video had already been viewed 220,000 times.

The series will now continue at a regular pace with exclusive insights and a new episode will be released every week. The series consists of video clips approximately six to nine minutes long in portrait format 9:16, which means they are ideally tailored to the screens of smartphones and tablets.

Museum guide as the host on Instagram

The automotive stars of this new digital offering are absolute dream cars from Mercedes-Benz, contained in the various Legend and Collection rooms of the Museum. The selection ranges from the impressive Mercedes-Benz 500 K Special Roadster from the 1930s to the 123 model series 300 TD lifestyle estate from the late 1970s, and a legendary racing car is included – as is an electric vehicle.

In all the episodes, Museum guide Pádraic Ó Leanacháin takes viewers on exploratory journeys behind doors, under bonnets and into the history of motorcar development. Pádraic Ó Leanacháin is well known to the followers of the Mercedes-Benz Museum on social media – more than one-and-a-half million of them on Instagram alone. The guide has already hosted the interactive tour of the Mercedes-Benz Museum via Instagram Story (http://mb4.me/MuseumTour).

  • Episode 2: The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster (W 198, 1954 to 1963)
In 1957, the 300 SL Roadster replaced the 300 SL Gullwing from 1954 with its characteristic top-hinged doors. The video tells the story of the design solution that made the open-top sports car possible back then – and where, in contrast to the coupé, the petrol filler is.

One of the secrets of this electrically powered super sports car was the “SLS eSound”, a sound system specially developed for the vehicle. In the Instagram video clip, Pádraic Ó Leanacháin opens the doors of the car, and shows the interior and what is hidden under the bonnet. The video is scheduled to go online on 25 May 2020 on the Instagram channel @mercedesbenzmuseum, and on 1 June 2020, it will appear on @mercedesbenz.
  • Episode 5: Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 (W 109, 1965 to 1972)
The V8 engine used in this high-performance saloon was taken from a very special Mercedes-Benz motorcar. On Instagram TV, viewers can also learn more about the performance of this S-Class predecessor at sports car level, as well as its top-of-the-class comfort and spaciousness.

This episode of “Exclusive insights” deals with the biography of the DTM champion car of 1991 and 1992. This racing car was based on the highly successful “Baby Benz”, as the compact class of the time was popularly known. The video reveals who the “EVO II” shares its name with as a competition car.

  • Episode 7: The Mercedes-Benz 300 TD (S 123, 1977 to 1986)
Tourism and transport: The abbreviation of the Mercedes-Benz T-models provides a clue as to the range of uses these lifestyle estate cars were used for. In the video, viewers, together with Pádraic Ó Leanacháin, explore the boot and discover the focus of the exhibit at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.
The video is scheduled to go online on 15 June 2020 on the Instagram channel @mercedesbenzmuseum, and it will appear on @mercedesbenz a week later.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum has more than 160 vehicles and a total of more than 1,500 exhibits on show in a space covering around 16,500 square metres. The permanent exhibition tells the history and stories of mobility on nine levels – from the invention of the motorcar in 1886 right through to the future. The duration of the special “40 Years of the G-Class” exhibition has been extended and will now remain open until September 2020.
