Helium Named to Fast Company’s Annual List of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2020

San Francisco, CA, USA – WEBWIRE

SAN FRANCISCO (March 10, 2020) -- Helium has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies (MIC) for 2020.

The list honors the businesses making the most profound impact on both industry and culture, showcasing a variety of ways to thrive in today’s fast-changing world. This year’s MIC list features 434 businesses from 39 countries.

“We’re honored to be recognized by Fast Company as one of its most innovative companies for 2020. Our new incentive model powered by blockchain continues to drive the fastest growing IoT wireless network in the United States.” said Amir Haleem, CEO and Founder of Helium. “This award isn’t just for us, it’s for our ecosystem of early customers, partners, and community members who own, operate, and grow The People’s Network.”

As our world becomes more connected, there are millions of low-bandwidth Internet of Things (IoT) devices that need network connectivity but can’t access Wi-Fi or afford expensive cellular plans. In June 2019, Helium launched the world’s first peer-to-peer wireless network, The People’s Network, with the Helium Hotspot. The Helium Hotspot is a new wireless device that provides connectivity 200 times farther than Wi-Fi thanks to open-source “LongFi” architecture and transmits data at a fraction of the cost compared to cellular. The Hotspot also acts as a miner on the Helium Blockchain, incentivizing anyone to deploy a Hotspot and earn a new cryptocurrency, Helium (HNT), for building the network and transferring IoT device data. Only 50-100 Hotspots are needed to provide coverage for an entire city.

With a nationwide network live in 745+ cities and all 50 states since launch, developers and enterprises can now connect a new class of IoT devices that would otherwise be impossible under the traditional telco model, from remote wildfire or agricultural sensors to smart pet collars, scooters, and bikes being tracked across any city.

In addition, Helium is excited to announce the expansion of The People’s Network into Canada. As of today, any consumer in Canada can pioneer coverage in their city by purchasing a Hotspot.

Fast Company’s editors and writers sought out the most groundbreaking businesses on the planet and across myriad industries. They also judged nominations received through their application process.

The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s signature franchise and one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides both a snapshot and a road map for the future of innovation across the most dynamic sectors of the economy.

“At a time of increasing global volatility, this year’s list showcases the resilience and optimism of businesses across the world. These companies are applying creativity to solve challenges within their industries and far beyond,” said Fast Company senior editor Amy Farley, who oversaw the issue with deputy editor David Lidsky.

Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue (March/April 2020) is now available online at fastcompany.com/most-innovative-companies/2020, as well as in app form via iTunes and on newsstands beginning March 17, 2020. The hashtag is #FCMostInnovative.
