"The most successful professional speakers are diversified well beyond giving speeches."

Tampa FL,  Feb. 25, 2020:  Marketdata LLC, a leading independent market research publisher  since 1979, has published a new 162-page report entitled: The U.S. Motivational Speakers Industry .  This is the ONLY publicly available study about this $1.9 billion business. The study traces the market from 2005-2025 Forecast, examining the nature of the business, operating metrics/characteristics of speakers, what events and meeting planners want from speakers, plus in-depth profiles of 36 of the top professional speakers on the talk circuit, what they do and how much money they make.
According to Research Director, John LaRosa:  “Most Professional speakers  can’t make a living solely on speeches. They write books, create online courses, do webinars and podcasts and personal/business coaching as well, leveraging their message.”

Major Findings:

* Market Value…  Marketdata estimates that the motivational speakers’ market in the U.S. generated an estimated $1.9 billion in revenues in 2019. Marketdata analysts project that the value of the professional speaking industry will grow at a 4.1% average annual pace, reaching $2.30 billion by 2025.

* There are an estimated 40,000 professional speakers in the U.S., 79% of whom do this part-time.

* The “average” professional speaker has an annual income of about $106,000. Senior-level motivational speaker earnings begin at $217,872 per year.

* Non-speaking activities (selling books, DVDs, online courses, doing coaching, consulting, webinars, etc.) account for 60% of a speaker’s total income.

* 95% of all professional speakers make less than $10,000 per speech. The sweet spot for most speakers seems to be about $6,000.

* The industry is sensitive to recessions, as was seen during the Great Recession of 2008, due to overall corporate cutbacks.
* Speaking fees seem to be stable, and vary widely, depending on the speaker’s experience, position and name recognition. Many speakers speak for free when starting out, charge about $3,500 per speech when they are experienced, and may charge up to $100,000 or more if they are a former President or national politician.
* There is a scarcity of female professional speakers and those catering to younger audiences such as Millennials. Many of the top speakers of the past few decades are retiring or cutting back their travel, shifting to creating online courses, webinars, writing books and offering personal coaching services.
* Speakers’ bureaus are less important than years ago, as many speakers market themselves via YouTube and their websites, and meeting planners can find speakers on their own.
* Meeting planners today want speakers that can provide practical knowledge and give an audience a measurable return on their investment – not just a rah rah, feel good motivational presentation. In addition, Millennials crave engagement and interaction.

“Industry analysts claim that there are 23.4 million events and meetings each year in North America. That’s 64,000 events per DAY that pay for public speakers.”,  according to John LaRosa.
