Seagate’s Springtown Plant Receives National Award for Energy Efficiency

SPRINGTOWN, Northern Ireland—18 December 2006— Seagate’s (NYSE:STX) Springtown facility has picked up an energy efficiency award at the National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) annual dinner and awards banquet held recently in London.

The award is open to manufacturing sites that are in Climate Change Agreements managed by NMI for the semiconductor sector. As part of this process, NMI collect energy and production information that monitors the CO2 emissions from 28 sites within this sector.

The energy efficiency award was presented by British Energy to Mark Moroney, senior facilities director at Springtown.

“Seagate is committed to reducing energy consumption and takes very seriously its responsibility to help reduce emissions of global warming gasses,” said Moroney. “At Springtown, we’ve been working on a number of energy conservation projects including: the centralisation of our chilled water plant, enabling us to shut down four chillers and switch several distribution pumps to standby mode; and a reduction in speed of our cleanroom air handling units which, while still allowing us to maintain stringent cleanroom conditions, resulted in a saving of more than 1,400 megawatt hours per year.”

On behalf of British Energy, Derek Boyd, chief executive, National Microelectronics Institute, congratulated Seagate on its achievement saying; “The Energy Efficiency Award 2006 is given to a site that has demonstrated first-class energy management over a number of years. Over the past few years, Seagate has invested in its Springtown facility and has more than doubled production while maintaining constant energy use. The company fully participates in NMI’s Utilities Best Practice programme and is completely aligned with the collaborative ethos of sharing information and best practice across the sector.”
