• Read, read, read.

  Being a good writer goes hand-in-hand with being well-read. Devote your time to reading the pieces of writing that are related to what you want to write. So, if you want to write poetry, be familiar with the works of great poets and if you want to be a novelist, then read the novels of your favorite authors.

• Show your readers instead of telling them.

  Using too many adjectives and adverbs to describe a person’s eyes or an animal’s fur can make your readers bored, as this slows down your story’s pace. Avoid being wordy as much as possible. Instead, you can opt, for example, to show how characters behave by describing how they act around the people they love and the people they detest.

• Let your characters do the talking.

  How do you get to know the people in your life? Isn’t it through what they say and the manner they say it? You can relate this to how your readers feel about the fictional characters you write about. Give your characters voices. It is through their dialogues that they begin to act like living, breathing people.

• Continue to polish your work.

  Be confident in your abilities and aim to create the best piece you can. However, if you feel your first draft still needs a little more work, polish it through the editing process. This stage is crucial to make your piece readable to your audience. Go over what you’ve written and see what needs to be added, what you can do without, and what revisions you can make to improve the quality of your writing.
